Godzilla Vs. Gigan (Godzilla on Monster Island) (Blu-Ray) When alien invaders, plans for a children's theme park and four giant monsters with six heads between them all collide, the result is the inevitable battle for the fate of the Earth. At least, that's how it is for Godzilla, who teams up with his former spiky foe Anguirus for a tag team match against two of his greatest adversaries: the legendary three headed King Ghidorah and Gigan, the cyborg hench-monster for insidious insect aliens whose plot to wipe out all human life is cleverly disguised as plans for the construction of a new children's theme park. Unfortunately for the bug's diabolical designs, their secret monster control codes are accidentally discovered by comic book artist Gengo Kotaka, who broadcasts the master tape and brings Team Godzilla into play. It's not going to be an easy fight, though, as the odds are four heads to two, and King Ghidorah's one of Godzilla's toughest opponents. With his cybernetic weaponry Gigan is equally ruthless, and his alien masters are as hard to kill as the cockroaches they resemble. Will Earth's biggest defenders finally fall? Or will Godzilla, and insecticide, triumph over all? Find out in GODZILLA VS. GIGAN!

Of all the Sci-Fi landmarks to have come from the 1950's, Joseph Newman's 'This Island Earth' is probably the most original. In terms of plot, this film is more complex than any of its contemporaries and demands more from its viewers than the stereotypical B-movie of the era. It also utilises suspense mechanisms at a higher level than its brethren apparent.
Luckily, every part of the movie's fabric is strong enough to act as a support beam to hold the immense weight of its storyline. For 1955, the special effects are state of the art and heavily invested in. These hold up impeccably today because the team had crafted something miles beyond sticking sparklers in the tail pipes of die-cast models or messing about with thirty-nine cent wire devices.
Makeup is first rate also, even that of the much-assailed crustaceoid guard. Interestingly (but hardly surprisingly), Jack Arnold (the Godfather of monster makeup) was the one who directed the climactic scenes involving this hostile being. Comprised of the fruits of some very hard work (SFX were two years in the making), 'This Island Earth' looks almost too good to be true. Consequently, it shouldn't take much to appreciate that there is no fair way to make fun of this film or any aspect of its appearance without seriously scrutinising the work in very fine detail.

PLOT - Essentially friendly aliens make contact with top notch Earth scientists to aid in the defence of their home planet Metaluna. However, by the time Exeter (the alien Earth expedition leader) manages to transport two of these nuclear boffins back to Metaluna, it's too late: Metaluna is being destroyed by an enemy civilisation. Exeter and his superiors formulate a last ditch plan - to colonise Earth and make Mankind docile to their orders. The two human scientist-prisoners make good their escape from Exeter's damaged spacecraft on the haphazard journey back from the chaos, leaving him to smash into the ocean.
This film has suffered much battering over the years. Ironically, it's the most thought provoking of the genre. The messages in 'This Island Earth' are certainly subtle, so unlike those to be found in 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' or 'Forbidden Planet'. It's refreshing to cast an eye back at this release and acknowledge it for its complexity at a time when wafer thin ideas were given substance by special effects and quaint models only. Having said that, there are a few things in here that one can be forgiven for laughing at. The benevolent aliens with their huge foreheads doubtlessly inspired Saturday Night Live's hugely popular Coneheads feature sketches. Also, the actors seem a little leaden at times, surprising given the awkwardness of their predicament.
Watching this movie in Twenty Hundred isn't difficult at all, though. As a matter of fact, it's all too easy to enjoy it no matter how high or low your expectations run. 'This Island Earth' has, admittedly like cheese, aged extremely well and that's the big secret. As a video, the transfer is pure and clean and it makes for terrific weekend entertainment thanks to its standing as the best science fiction film for its time.

With its alluring tales of Gothic mystery and supernatural intrigue, Dark Shadows became one of the most popular daytime series of all time. Since first airing on ABC-TV from 1966 to 1971, Dark Shadows has earned the reputation of being one of the most unusual and enduring programs in television history. The character of Barnabas Collins, a guilt-ridden, 175-year-old vampire, brought the show tremendous success.

Most serious fans of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE already own all of the individual sets that make up this DVD collection, so I thought I would address this review to those who own none of them and will make up the primary target for this set and focus on two questions. First, how does this set differ from the individual season collections? The answer is that they are identical. This set does not represent a new product in any way, but merely collects all of the seasons in a new, low price. If you don't own any of the individual seasons, this is an absolutely ideal way to discover the Buffyverse. Second (and for me this is the fun part), what's this Buffy chick all about?

What sets BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER apart from most other shows, apart from the individual brilliant scripts that graced most of the episodes, is that the show over the course of seven seasons tells a story. What the casual viewer of the show could easily miss is the semi-tragic themes underlying the series: young, happy cheerleader and inevitable prom queen is pulled away by destiny from the life she loves to unwillingly undertake the burden of being her generation's Chosen One: a super-empowered heroine to fight against the powers of darkness. This is a responsibility she has neither sought nor desired, and one of the persistent themes of the show is that destiny basically dealt Buffy a nasty set of cards. Sure, she has super strength and agility and recuperative powers, but she also knows how she became The Slayer: someone else died. For one becomes the Slayer only by the death of another Slayer, which calls attention to the fact that she, too, is destined to die to make way for another Slayer. As she puts it in one episode, "Every slayer comes with an expiration date." She goes from a carefree, happy young girl to someone who wonders if she will make it to the age of 25.

Ultimately, however, the show isn't about a girl with super powers, but about taking responsibility for one's life, for accepting the cards that life has dealt one and making the most of that. Over the course of seven seasons all of the major characters struggle with this precise issue. All of them continually have to face up to the demands of the moral, and what is unusual for a genre show, they all have to work hard to be better people. More than about fighting vampires, the show is ultimately about the fighting of one's inner demons, with the external monsters being mere metaphors for that which lies within. As a result, all of the major characters changed dramatically over the course of seven seasons.

A second great theme of the show is that of community. The show actually contains a bit of a lie in the famous opening words that introduced the show in the first season: it says that unto each generation a Slayer is born and that SHE ALONE possesses the strength to fight the vampires and demons. Only, that isn't at all the case on the show. In fact, Buffy becomes less, not more, effective when she becomes a loner. As Spike, an evil vampire who has killed two Slayers in the past, said at the beginning of Season Two: "A Slayer with family and friends. That sure as hell wasn't in the brochure." And it isn't! Says so right at the beginning of the show. The Intro should read "She and her extensive support network" will fight the demons. And showing that no one understands this better than Spike, in Season Four he attempts to help a demon destroy the Slayer by sowing discord among the Scoobies, as the demon fighting buddies referred to themselves (this was before Sarah Michelle Gellar's unfortunate forays into the SCOOBY DOO movies). He fails when the four key members respond by forging a stronger bond than ever.

Over the seven seasons, Buffy struggles constantly against her destiny, initially fighting and resisting it, gradually accepting it, frequently resenting it, and eventually embracing it before the magnificent resolution in the final episode. While there is always only one Slayer (though on Buffy, there are two, but that is a different though very interesting story), there are always many potential Slayers. In the final episode of the series, Buffy realizes how they can make all the potential Slayers into actual Slayers, and after they do so they are able to defeat the baddies and save the world from evil, again. In literally the last five seconds of the series, Faith, the other Slayer, asks Buffy what she's going to do now that she's no longer the only Slayer. In a beautiful resolution of the central tragedy in the series, a blissful, contented, expectant smile breaks out over Buffy's face. Her life has been given back to her. The expiration date has been repealed.

Those who have only occasionally dipped into the show will not be able to appreciate how brilliantly written the show is. It is as if every individual writer knew every other line ever written in the show, and the result is a self-consciousness in the series that is highly unusual for TV. At the very end of Season Six, for instance, Buffy's best friend Willow utters the words, "Bored now," which is not merely a reference to something she said in Season Three, but brilliantly explains where her character is at that point in the show. The scripts are, in my opinion, simply the best TV has ever seen. They are dramatic, they are believable (astonishing in a show about vampires), they are profoundly emotional, and they are funny. In fact, the show really did manage to be several things at once. I think this ability to stride several fences is one of the reasons why BUFFY, though easily the finest show on television for most of its run, never won or even received an Emmy nomination for Best Show. Should it have been nominated as Best Drama or Best Comedy? (The complete neglect by the extraordinarily conservative Emmys of BUFFY has inspired Salon to create a new TV award, the Buffy, for the most unjustly neglected show on TV, with THE WIRE as the first recipient.)

The writing really was the key. I don't want to imply that other things weren't done as well. Though not one of the great casts in TV history, all of the actors did a great job and there were some truly memorable characters, from Buffy to Willow, Xander, Spike, Giles, Cordy, Anya, and Angel (who went on to star in his own spin off). The sets were always first rate and it was one of the few shows on TV to have its own utterly unique look, merely from the lighting and camerawork. Speaking of camerawork, few TV shows have ever taken so much care with the way scenes were shot. There was even their own unique blend of camp. For instance, fighting vampires is tough work, but Buffy inevitably went on patrol wearing some incredibly stylish outfits. My favorite is when she goes to the graveyard in Season Six wearing an ankle length white cashmere duster. I'm sure anyone about to engage in physical combat would decide to wear such an expensive and delicate item. But as good as all of these elements were, it all came in the end back to the writing. The show was brilliantly written on multiple levels. Many of the episodes were astonishingly good, but within them the individual lines were simply astonishing. I have many shows that I love, but in the history of television there are only two that contains dozens of lines that I can recall with ease: MONTY PYTHON and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. But apart from the individual episodes and the huge panoply of memorable lines, the seasons were almost always well conceived and executed. And even when individual seasons contained flaws in their, such as Seasons 4 and 7, these were more than made up for by the way they all fit into a larger story.

In the end, no series that I know of had a better story to tell than BUFFY. As much as I loved THE X-FILES, the series was always better on the individual episode level than it was as a whole. Lone episodes of THE X-FILES are as good as any in the history of TV, but the deep back story by the end of the series ended up being more than a little muddled and incomplete. When BUFFY ended, there was a single brilliant and marvelously develop tale of a young girl who was forced to give up her life for the greater good, but who in the end managed to get her life back again. I honestly believe that BUFFY will be the gold standard for television shows in the future. It has raised the bar for what can be done and should be done on television, so in the end Buffy might not have saved the world from the powers of evil; she just might have saved television as well.

Karate expert and cold voiced Lou in this film. What's different from him and so many seventies mob guys? Lou has no legs and operates his killings from a wheelchair equipped with a shotgun on the armrest and ninja stars in the spokes. Yep, it could only be that era, and Ted Vollrath (who in real life taught his Karate skills to many disabled people in his lifetime after having his legs amputated after being seriously injured in the Korean War) is a sheer badass enforcer to a drug lord in a film lost over the years. No releases of "The Amazing Mr. No Legs" anywhere, and it's a damn shame.

We open in the moustache seventies with some music sounding like shopping mall funk as a Stan Lee clone and other silent bad guys are in a basement hiding drugs in vegetables (another review claims they are cigars, but they look like vegetables to me). There's a deal gonna go down. Traditionally for crime movies, the deal goes down on the docks and two porno star looking cops interrupt it. A freeze frame fight sequence starts as the credits roll with some congas playing and slow motion shots pop up as well.

Seems to be another deal going down. In the middle of it an invalid dude in a wheelchair is rolled up by a young guy. He has a shotgun attached to one armrest and blasts the hell out of two fellas. He tells his friend to grab all of the gear. He works for D'Angelo, played by Lloyd Bochner (who amongst many credits voiced Mayor Hamilton Hill in a few Batman cartoon series').

Meanwhile, Ken, who is a small time guy in the gang who's only trying to pay off his college fees, has an argument with his girl Tina in his apartment. She falls, cracks her head open and is dead. Ken naturally panics, he calls Lou, a.k.a. No Legs, who arrives with his friend to survey the situation. The girl's brother is a cop which annoys Lou. They inject a large dose of heroin into her corpse and dump her body somewhere quiet. “I have a way of disposing of evidence,” says Lou and then shoots Ken in a cold reptile sort of manner.

Her body is found and Andy her cop brother (who incidently was part of the dockside raid) drowns his sorrows in a bar listening to a crappy soul band that sing way too long for comfort since the singer looks like Harold Bishop from the Aussie soap "Neighbours." He pairs off with some girl that's been watching him all night even though she knows him.

Andy finds himself teamed up with Chuck, who discovers the heroin Tina used was injected an hour after her death. Chuck and the captain decide not to share this information with Andy yet. Chuck decides to investigate Ken and Tina's apartment, taking what he reckons is blood samples off the floor and a photo. The landlady tells him Ken is missing.

D'Angelo is furious about the murder. There is some tension between him and Lou. D'Angelo says that if Ken's body is found “you'll find yourself on a street corner with a tin cup selling lead pencils!” This flips Lou out and privately he goes ballistic telling his sidekick he wants to kill D'Angelo. Not long afterwards, Lou is by the side of his pool doing press-ups on the arms of his chair when a mob of killers invade his yard. Lou throws Ninja stars, which are attached to the wheel spokes and then in this one scene he gets to show his fighting skills which are simply jawdropping. He beats the shit out of two of the gang with his stumps and fists whilst using the stars to kill the others. Then Lou decides it's time to go to war against his old boss.

What's cool is the fact there is very little focus on his disability, instead the character is a cold, humourless, ruthless killing machine with the same feel of the hitmen in the first "Godfather" movie. Unfortunately "The Amazing Mr. No Legs" is quite an empty, dull film that has been built around him. It is a damn shame as well since this is Ted Vollrath's only excursion into movie preservation.

The story is like so many other seventies crime thrillers, most of the acting is mid way between appauling and kindergarten level, and what really stands out are the fist fights -- they are simply terrible and most of the punches do not even connect. Plus there's weird moments, like in the middle of a bar fight some big bruiser bloke throws a chair into a mirror and seems to stare in shock at the curse he's unleashed upon himself.

To top it all, the end drags by about fifteen minutes, mostly padded by a twelve minute car chase scene. That's right, twelve minutes. A poor man's "French Connection." In the middle of this teeth grinding boredom appeared one of those weird moments again which neither me or my Horror Soulmate could work out: why does a cop wear a motorbike helmet whilst driving his car? I mean what did we just see?

This film is not available anywhere. The copy I watched is a DVD-R from what I reckon is a very old Cable TV showing so it was hard to hear mostly. It is a lost exploitation film like "Hammerhead" which I have also reviewed previously. Unlike that film I can't truly say that "The Amazing Mr. No Legs" is worthy of hunting down but if you see it for the right price then have a look just for Ted Vollrath alone and the incredible<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;"> pool side
fight.

The Movie:
Two foxy young British lasses, Liz (Cassandra Magrath) and Kristy
(Kestie Morassi) are on vacation in Australia where they meet up with a
local guy named Ben (Nathan Phillips) who decides they should pool their
money to buy a cheap car and go on a road trip into the outback to
check out a giant crater out at Wolf Creek Park. The girls figure this
is a great idea and seeing as Liz is kind of sweet on Ben, they all
climb into the station wagon and off they go with their camping gear to
enjoy the sites.
The trio makes it to the park after a brief incident at a roadside
restaurant where a few local guys make cat calls at the girls, and they
set about exploring the amazing crater and the area around it. After
their hike they head back to the car and they find that no matter what
they do to it, it won't start. Just when they think they're stuck there
for the night, a big truck rolls up beside them and a local guy named
Mick (John Jarrett) gets out. He figures he can fix their car, but he'll
have to tow it back to his place to do it. Although Mick seems alright
at first, the more they get to know him they stranger he seems until
they learn the hard way that sometimes you really can't trust in the
kindness of strangers.

The feature debut of Australian filmmaker/writer Greg McLean, Wolf Creek
is a pretty intense way to spend an hour and forty minutes. Though it
starts off fairly slow (a common complain lodged against the first half
of the film is that it's boring), we get to know the characters just
enough that we're able to invest some effort into caring about them a
bit so that when the inevitable happens and they're put into the
jeopardy we all know they'll find themselves in, it works. The fact that
the movie is pretty realistic helps matters a fair bit (a disclaimer at
the beginning of the picture claims that it is based on true events –
how accurate this might be is debatable) in the suspense department, as
it would be all too easy in real life to make the simple mistake of just
trusting the wrong person.
When it all hits the fan, and we know early on that it's going to,
McLean shows a keen eye for directing horrific set pieces. The movie
doesn't really pull any punches and the murder set pieces are both gory
and completely unnerving – spines are severed, people are shot, bodies
are cut up and there are all manner of after effects scattered about the
locale. In fact, the location where the last half of the movie takes
place is reminiscent of the farm house where the ending of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
takes place – it's creepy, eerie, and rundown in that scary all too
rural way. The camera captures everything, all the dirt, the dried
blood, the grease, the mud, the filth and it makes sure we see it to get
a better feeling of just how remote the characters are, and how
socially odd old Mick might just be. McLean also does a good job of
placing us out in the middle of the outback and in the middle of nowhere
even before the car breaks down. There's a serious vibe of alienation
and loneliness in and around Wolf Creek that works on the same level
that Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes does – these people are
completely alone against whoever wants to do them harm and there's no
one around to help them at all. On that level, Wolf Creek is
raging success – it puts us in the characters' places and lets us feel
for ourselves how desperate their situation is. The photography and
sense of composition shown in the movie to make this happen is extremely
impressive, and this movie just looks great from start to finish.
Adding to all of this are the performances. Cassandra Magrath and
Kestie Morassi are not only easy on the eyes but they're both pretty
solid actresses if their performances here are anything to go by.
Magrath in particular is able to portray genuine fear very effectively
in her eyes but also manages to bring a sense of intelligence to her
character that makes a few of the survivalist instincts shown in the
later part a little more believable. While Nathan Phillips doesn't
really stand out much as Ben, he's not bad either – he's simply there, a
cocky young man who's hoping to get somewhere with one or both of these
girls and to show them a good time while they're visiting his country.
The star of the show, however, has got to be John Jarrett who is both
menacing and sincerely funny as Mick. He's a physically imposing figure,
a big guy with a bad temper, and he's able to bring a very manic look
to the movie that really sets him apart from the pack.
While the sadistic kill scenes might be upsetting to some, Wolf Creek
is definitely more than an exercise in sadism or gore – the character
development, while not mind blowing, is strong enough to make for some
interesting plot twists (an inferred love triangle of sorts is touched
upon) and out of that the suspense in the later half is genuinely tens
although those looking for gore won't be disappointed as the movie does
deliver on that front. If the movie has one weakness it's that yes,
there are some small pacing problems in the opening half, and it does
feel in spots that it's taking a little too long to get going but its
hardly boring, rather its coming to a slow boil.
The movie also has an interesting sense of black humor running
underneath the surface. Aside from the obvious jokes like the ones that
Mick and Ben make back and fourth at times as they first get to know
each other there are subtle references to Crocodile Dundee and the Australian stereotype that Mick himself represents. While not necessarily humorous, per se, Wolf Creek
also toys with our preconceived notions of just who exactly is supposed
to survive in a slasher movie, a clever way of manipulating the
audience.
Wolf Creek is not going to single handedly revolutionize the
horror genre, it's derivative in spots of some of the aforementioned
seventies classics that have come before it, but it is a well made, well
acted, and refreshingly unflinching and very bleak movie that succeeds
in its goal of providing some good entertaining scares. Greg McLean
shows a whole lot of potential, here's hoping he can build upon what he
has shown us he can do in this film.
Worth noting is that this DVD presents Wolf Creek in an
'unrated version' which differs slightly from its R-rated theatrical
counterpart. The main differences are that two scenes which were
included on the PAL DVD releases as deleted scenes have now been put
back into the film – the first scene shows Kristy waking up beside a
drunken and passed out Ben in bed and the second scene shows Liz in a
pit at the mine where she finds a whole lot of rotten dead bodies laying
around. The theatrical version ran ninety-nine minutes, this version
runs just under one hundred and four, and these two scenes seem to make
up the difference.
The DVD
Video:
Wolf Creek was shot on DV but this 1.85:1 anamorphic
widescreen transfer almost looks like film in spots, which is a
testament to the cinematography. The image is strong from start to
finish very deep blacks and nice color reproduction. Shadow detail stays
surprisingly strong in the later half of the film where everything is
taking place in the darkness, while flesh tones remain lifelike and
natural looking. There's a pretty decent level of both foreground and
background detail present in the image throughout and while there is
some edge enhancement present, as well as some aliasing, overall the
movie looks very good on DVD.
Sound:
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound tracks are available in both English
and French and optional subtitles are available in English and Spanish
While there are a few spots where the rear channels sound a little low,
overall this is a very good effort. The surrounds are used pretty
actively during most of the key moments and it makes for some pretty
atmospheric viewing. Dialogue is clean, clear and easy to follow (as
long as you're okay with the accents – they're really not that
difficult…) and the sound effects and the background score are mixed
into the movie nicely without ever overpowering the performers as they
speak.
Extras:
The commentary track with director/writer Greg McLean, executive
producer Matt Hearn and actors Cassandra Magrath and Kestie Morassi from
the PAL release that came out a while ago has been ported over to this
domestic release. While there is too much emphasis at times on how much
fun the shoot was and how everyone liked everyone else, McLean does
manage to get some good information out through this discussion, even if
the two actresses don't add a whole lot of anything to the talk. He
covers the tight shooting schedule which resulted in them having to film
certain scenes in the rain even though the script didn't call for that
and he talks about having to work on a low budget. Had he been on this
track solo it probably would have been more interesting as at times the
discussion loses a bit of its focus. Regardless, it's worth checking out
even if you don't want to listen to it all the way through, as it's
good, just not great.
The best of the supplements on this release is The Making Of Wolf Creek,
a really interesting and quite lengthy documentary that examines the
origins of the film. There's some great behind the scenes footage here
as well as the usual assortment of talking head interviews and snippets
with the cast and crew members. It's interesting to see some of the
locations shooting and what not as it happens and to get some insight
from the people who made the movie as to how their experiences were on
the set.
Rounding out the extra features is a brief deleted scene entitled G'Day
and the film's original theatrical trailer. The twenty minute interview
with John Jarrett that was on the PAL release has not been carried over
for the R1 DVD.
Final Thoughts:
Wolf Creek is a very solid low budget horror film that messes
with your head a little bit and gets under your skin. It builds slowly
but the pay off is completely worth it and a few nice twists along the
way make this one horror buffs should watch out for. Dimension's DVD
doesn't include all of the extras from the PAL release but it looks good
and sounds good and the supplements that we do receive are pretty
decent. Recommended.
Frat House Massacre DVD (Synapse) (NTSC Region 1)

From the creators of CAMP SLAUGHTER comes FRAT HOUSE MASSACRE, a true homage to the best of the late 70's grindhouse and early 80's slasher films! Sean (Chris Prangley) and his little brother Bobby (Rane Jameson) thought joining the Delta Iota Epsilon fraternity would be the best time of their lives with parties, freedom, girls and sex. The fraternity president Mark (Jon Fleming of TVs WILL & GRACE and DANTEíS COVE), however, is a little strange. His twisted hazing rituals include extreme physical and mental torture that lead the boys down a horrific path of destruction and death. But death may be just the beginning, as this gritty twisted film unfolds. Inspired by actual events and set in the year 1979, FRAT HOUSE MASSACRE is a disturbing journey through the twisted world of fraternity boys, pledges and the not-so-innocent sorority sisters swept up in their madness. Loaded with violence, gore, nudity and a fantastic music score by Claudio Simonetti, this DVD is the director's cut containing over twenty minutes of additional footage.
In 1989, it became the first Canadian shot-on-Super 8 gore shocker commercially released on VHS. Today, it remains perhaps the most bizarre, depraved and mind-boggling chunk of Canuxploitaion ever unleashed upon humanity. Adult film superstar Amber Lynn and co-writer/producer Barry J. Gillis star in this surreal saga about two friends who visit a remote cabin, only to discover a womb of monstrous horror that demands graphic dismemberment. It's an inexplicable orgy of eye ripping, beer guzzling, boob baring, skull drilling, sandwich making, chain sawing, bad acting and post-sync dubbing from co-writer/producer/director Andrew Jordan that has spawned its own disturbing cult of fans. Some will be repulsed. Others may be transformed forever. But you have never seen anything like THINGS.
The Olga movies have a place in exploitation cinema history as being some of the first successful 'roughie' films and they gave us one of the first demented female icons of the grindhouse era. I decided to start out with this flick as it is the first of the series and I have to say that I was underwhelmed. Maybe it is because I have already seen the Ilsa flicks (which were obviously inspired by the Olga series) as they were way more offensive and explicit thereby making White Slaves of Chinatown quite tame in comparison. This resulted in a tedious movie that consisted of narration over various scenes of women becoming addicted to drugs and being tortured for not submitting to Olga's demands. I'm sure that these scenes were offensive back in 1964 and would probably still offend many today (especially in an abortion scene) but I guess I have become quite desensitized to this kind of material. There is an extremely annoying score that consists of an endless loop of Chinese music, some hero-like jazz, and rendition of "Night on Bald Mountain" that kept making me think of Fantasia and took me right out of the picture. This movie hasn't aged well and reminded me more of Reefer Madness than the sexploitation classic it claims to be.

In a move that makes little sense, to me at least, UK distributor Safecracker Pictures has retitled the forthcoming Battlefield Death Tales (sequel to indie anthology Bordello Death Tales), to Nazi Zombie Death Tales. There's no doubt that Nazis and zombies are in the public eye at the moment with Iron Sky and The Walking Dead respectively keeping both unsavoury group's profiles high, but this has the air of cheap sensationalism about it. Apparently this move is for the UK market only, so if the film is sold to other territories it has a better chance of retaining its original moniker. Take a look at the recently released poster above that bears the original title. It's striking yet austere, without having to resort to cheap shots like Nazis and zombies to sell the concept. Then take a look at the proposed DVD artwork that makes it look like cheap, straight to DVD rubbish. It is cheap, this is low-budget British filmmaking, it is straight to DVD because cinema audiences want rom-coms and superheroes, but I'm confident it won't be rubbish.

Don't get me wrong, I've no aversion to cheap exploitative movies, but knowing how well-crafted Bordello Death Tales is makes me more than a little sad that Battlefield Death Tales has received this treatment. Enough grumbling from me, Battlefield... sorry, Nazi Zombie Death Tales will be released August 13th 2012 so if you want to pre-order a copy you can do so through the following link at Amazon UK. Silly title or not, it will rock I'm sure.
When you’ve seen as many bad, bad, bad low-budget zombie movies as I have (usually made by a guy with a camcorder and some people he conned off the street), you can easily get a bit jaded. But I have to admit, after taking a look at the trailer for Steven C. Miller’s 2006 zombie opus “Automaton Transfusion” (supposedly the first of a planned trilogy), my curiosity has been pique. This thing doesn’t look half bad!

Government experiments to resurrect the dead and transform them into super soldiers go horribly wrong, leaving a rampaging horde of the zombified guinea pigs to wreak havoc on a small town. Fortunately, three resourceful high school students demonstrate a knack for putting the ferocious flesh eaters out of their misery. The first installment of a planned trilogy, this low-budget fright film stars Garrett Jones, Juliet Reeves.

Bell from Hell DVD(NTSC Region 1)
A seemingly carefree young man named John (Reynaud Verley), released on probation from a sanatorium, visits his Aunt Marta (Viveca Lindfors) and three beautiful cousins. Gradually, through an escalating series of strange practical jokes, he sets a labyrinthine plot of vengeance in motion. Director Claudio Guerin Hill - who tragically died on the last day of shooting - and genre specialist, writer Santiago Moncada (Hatchet For The Honeymoon), deliver a deliciously chilling, darkly humorous masterpiece of horror, of disaffected youth driven to the brink of madness by the manipulative control of family and the hypocrisy of society in general. There are disturbing parallels to not only alienated international youth culture of the time but also the dictatorship of Generalissimo Francisco Franco who ruled Spain until his death in 1975. This marriage of grand guignol thriller and subtle, stinging social satire is supremely entertaining and comparable to such masters as Roman Polanski, Luis Bunuel and Mario Bava.
Finally, the seldom seen 1991 zombie film from Umberto Lenzi arrives stateside, uncut, digitally re-mastered, and in English for the very first time. The Black magic rites and powers of Voodoo and the Macumba are used to reanimate the corpses of zombified, revenge-seeking, black slaves. Acting out of retribution, the zombies tear, rip and bite anyone in their path of vengeance. Containing plenty of gore, and an early 1980's-style, this is one not to be missed.
After a series of misadventures on the road with a broken down bus and screaming girl students, ROSALIND RUSSELL toward the end of the film states: "It proved to be a wonderful experience." That she says it with so much conviction is a testament to her acting skill--because it's another matter for the audience.

This is one of those strained comedies where a series of seemingly disconnected incidents on the road are supposed to be hilarious, but are more likely to provide just a few chuckles. Most enjoyable of all is the scene where two of the more rebellious girls are asked to wash the bus and instead, send it through the car-washer apparatus with disastrous results. Most of the other attempts at humor are less successful and even more improbable, especially the sequence involving an Indian chase with a cameo by Milton Berle as a film director wearing an eye patch (a la Raoul Walsh).

STELLA STEVENS is the modern nun who has a run-in with some knife wielding bikers and is able to keep her cool and seem impervious to their threats. The dialog in this scene has to be heard to be believed. Let's just say it is about as far removed from reality as the script gets, and that's pretty far.

ROSALIND RUSSELL is stern and amusing as the head nun, ready with a quip whenever circumstances demand it. STELLA STEVENS, BINNIE BARNES and MARY WICKES are capable as the other sisters, but SUSAN ST. JAMES and a few of the other girls in the cast have irritating roles.

One of the best features: Lalo Schifrin's bouncy background score, but the whole film reflects the '60s to such an extent that it appears dated in the extreme. It's the sort of film that must have seemed dated even in '68.

Summing up: The only surprises were nice cameos by Van Johnson and Robert Taylor, both giving amiable performances.

Joey, a San Francisco lowlife and occasional porn star, takes a one day shoot, after which he wanders aimlessly around the city meeting random people and having anonymous sex.

Easily one of the most complex and underrated features of the golden age of sexually explicit cinema. Cinéma vérité style adult film blends elements of Warhol & John Cassavetes, with sharp widescreen cinematography and realistic improvisation into a always interesting, unpredictable character study. A totally believable time capsule of the period. The hardcore scenes are not meant to be erotic but just another facet of the sad losers that inhabit this world.

Chock full of snappy dialogue, extremely high production values, good acting, and a shit ton of fight scenes (including Ron Jeremy and Jerry Butler engaging is some sloppy kung-fu), RAW TALENT signaled the end of high budget and well made 35mm hardcore.

One thing that this film is known for in the original uncut version is it's "subliminal messages". During the sex scenes (and many others), a text message was flashed on the screen or 1 or 2 frames. This could range from "SEX" and "KILL" to "EAT" and "LAUGH".

"Raw Talent" was the seminal film for the 80's. With a better than average storyline, Jerry Butler (Bklyn's own) was able to shine. He WAS the James Dean of porn! Graced with chiseled features and natural comedic ability, his performances were always unpredictable and wacky. The accompanying soundtrack was also above par. The subliminal psychadelia scene was straight out of Floyd & Zeppelin. Unfortunately, "Raw Talent" was re-released with major Politically Correct edits. The masturbatory cooked turkey scene, the forced sex scene over a toilet bowl, and all the karate scenes are nowhere to be found.
