Graveyard Shift [VHS] (1990)

This movie is made rather half-heartedly, but it wallows so deep in the strange and disgusting that a fan of the horror genre can't help but be intrigued. It is based very loosely on Stephen King's story out of Night Shift. Its about a drifter who gets a job at an old mill where a bizarre death has just occured. The foreman is a sleazy adulterer who sleeps with his lady employees. The drifter falls for one of them and they become good friends. When one of the secretaries finds out she was put on cleanup, she trashes the foreman's car. Drifter stops the foreman from hitting the woman and the foreman asigns him to cleanup to take her place. That is when the party really gets started. The movie is by all means horrible, but it is still incredibly entertaining. It has no logic and the story is par at best, but you feel so compelled to watch it because it does hook you. Wich is why this is still one of my favorite horror movies. Look out for Brad Douriff as the exterminator.

Hunter's Blood (Embassy Home Entertainment)

Hunter’s Blood United Statesl – 1986 Director – Robert C. Hughes Embassy Home Entertainment, 1987, VHS Run Time - 1 hour, 42 min. Surprisingly comfortable within the warm fold of 80’s exploitation, Hunters Blood, with all the B names behind it, has a lot to go on, and with little hesitation it sets to work. The cover, and box synopsis immediately invoke Deliverance, an association I am surely not the first to draw (and in fact the reason I bought it). Nevertheless, Hunters Blood quickly sidesteps any chance at class with an instant shower scene, an asexual one, but the point is that we establish this as exploitation right away. David (Samuel Bottoms, Lance the surfer in Apocalypse Now) and his dad (Clu Gulager) don flannel & vests and hop into his uncles rumbling Bronco and rip up the road on their yearly hunting trip. Picking up dads brother and his New York lawyer buddy Marty (Joey Travolta) they back slap their way up to a beer joint in the Apilachians where loudmouth Marty plays the boorish tourist and gets the vengeance ball rolling. After sexually harassing the barmaid, they get in a knife fight with some more hillbillies, and take flight in the Bronco. With sheer stupid blundering luck propelling them from here on, the protagonists run into the redneck’s poaching operation. Time after time they are self-trippingly lucky enough to escape, capture, be captured by and escape again the bloodthirsty filth encrusted hillbillies. Yet, despite prolific flayed and crucified warnings from skittish Game Wardens, the group resorts to positive thinking. Thanks to good old fashioned yankee naivete, they continue the hunting trip. It is this very stubborn determination to die that makes the horror films of this generation so watchable. Somebody has to get shot, yes, there will be blood in this movie. Between a fair mix of shrieking idiocy and meat-headed obstinacy, the surviving civilised guys will, after a few dramatic personnel cutbacks, surely catch the last meat wagon back to town .

OCTOBER 14 VHS MOVIE REVIEW : SCHOOL OF DEATH (1975)

OCTOBER 14 VHS MOVIE REVIEW : SCHOOL OF DEATH (1975)
From mmmmmovies.blogspot.com

For the first twenty minutes or so, I fully expected Pedro Luis Ramírez's 1975 sinister-finishing-school thriller School of Death (El Colegio de la Muerte) to play out like a poor man's La Residencia (previously reviewed and drooled over on MMMMMovies here). SoD has a lot of the same elements that made that earlier flick so entertaining: a cold-as-ice headmistress with a creepily lesbonic right-hand girl, several instances of light bondage, and a shadow-draped old manor house serving as the dormitory where the young, orphaned charges must band together to survive their sadistic educations. Hell, the school even has a "Punishment Room" where naughty girls are sent to be whipped for the most minor infractions. Which is fine by me, of course--I don't mind if my 70s flicks are derivative, so long as they come from good sources.
